Stained Glass Doors: Homage to Past ArtisansThe process used in the work at kühl doors is one that has its origins in the Middle Ages and has been handed down through the Goldkühle family. For generations, my forefathers in Germany and in the United States have been fine craftsmen with various specialties. At a time when Wiedenbruck, Germany was known as a center for high quality craftsmanship, my great, great grandfather, Franz Anton Goldkühle (1827 - 1906) was a prominent woodworking artisan. Several of his works, commissioned by the church, have been preserved and exist today. I learned everything I know about the art of stained glass from my father, Dieter Goldkühle (1938 - ), who still sets a high standard of excellence for all his projects. An immigrant from Germany, his specialty is a different one than artistic glass doors. He's quite well known for creating interior stained glass. His work can be seen at the Washington National Cathedral, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Smithsonian Institution and Duke University. He can probably be found working in his Reston, Virginia studio at this very moment.
